Bola Tinubu, speaking at a meeting with delegates of the APC in Abeokuta on Thursday, June 2, 2002 said without his support, Abiodun would not have become governor.
“That one (referring to Abiodun) that is sitting down here, could he have become governor without me? We were all in the stadium where they tore all the posters. Even the candidacy of the party, they didn’t want to give it to him,” the APC chieftain said in Yoruba.
“It’s been over 25 years that I have been serving them. This one sitting at my back, Dapo, could he have become a governor if not for me,” he said.
However, responding to Tinubu via a tweet on Friday, June 3, 2022, the governor said he is not an emperor, adding that political office is not family inheritance of anyone.
Abiodun had in April 2022 declared that he would support Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s presidential bid.
Both Osinbajo and Tinubu were said to be instrumental to his victory when he battled former Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s anointed candidate, Abdulkabir Akinlade, in the last election.
According to Abiodun, Osinbajo’s academic qualifications as well as his pedigree serving as vice-president make him the best candidate for the presidency.
Dapo Abiodun’s statement reads; “I am not an emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance.
“I am holding this position in trust for all the people of this state and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement I made between the Almighty God and myself,” he said.
Meanwhile, the APC special convention for presidential primaries is slated to hold between June 6 to June 7, 2022 in Abuja.
