The need to concentrate more on giving back to one's alma mater, particularly at the elementary level, being the foundation for quality education, has been considered essential, to fortify teaching and learning.
Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said this during the commissioning and handing over the construction of a drainage system, administrative block, clinic, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) room, donated by the Old Pupils Association of St. Peter's Primary School, Isara Remo, Remo North Local Government of the state.
Prof. Arigbabu, who noted that activities of alma maters had focused more on secondary schools, with little or no attention given to primary schools, called on well-meaning individuals in the society to support the present government in the state, towards developing the sub-sector for better academic foundation, applauding the old pupils for giving back to their source.
The Commissioner said government remained committed to the education sector, pointing out that the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration had provided an enabling environment to public schools across the state through renovation and construction of schools and provision of furniture, in order to further improve the standard of education.
Speaking, a Member, representing Remo North Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Adelaja Dickson and the Chairman of Remo North Local Government, Hon. Dapo Odunsi, represented by his vice, Hon. Waheed Sopelola, appreciated the donors for executing the projects, which according to him, would positively impact on the education of pupils in the school.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Benson Lawal, said the philanthropic gesture was a wake-up call for other old student associations to replicate such necessary infrastructural development in primary schools in the state.
Meanwhile, Prof. Arigbabu has commended the remarkable and selfless support of the Old Students’ Associations in complementing government’s efforts at creating attractive and conducive teaching and learning environment in schools across the state.
The Commissioner gave the commendation at the commissioning of a block of two classrooms and two offices, renovated by 2001 Class Set and foundation laying of Buttery by 2002 Class Set, as well as other various projects by the Old Girls of Anglican Girls' Grammar School (AGGS), Ijebu-Ode, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the school, describing the Associations as the only group that supports government without expecting anything in return.
In his speech, Chairperson of the anniversary, Yeye Folashade Sosanwo-Adedeji, lauded government for its transformational policies in the education sector, promising the Association's continuous support in taking the state to a higher pedestal.
