OGUN TO INTRODUCE INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT SCHEME

                The Ogun State Government has disclosed its intention to unveil an integrated waste management scheme in furtherance of its determination to improve on waste management in the State.

          The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye stated this while inspecting the Saje Dumpsite in Abeokuta and others in the State Capital.

          Oyeleye said that the Senator Ibikunle Amosun–led Administration planned to put in place loading stations where refuse collected would be dumped before being transferred to the main dump sites across the State, saying that waste plant would also be installed to recycle solid waste.

          “Basically, due to our realization of the need to optimize waste collection, we have in the offing an integrated waste management system. Our plans are to develop Transfer Loading Stations for easy collection of waste and build a waste plant where waste can be recycled and used to generate energy, produce manure amongst other things, the administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun is determined to make these plans come to fruition”, he said.

          Speaking on his assessment of the Saje Dumpsite the largest in the State, the Commissioner gave the assurance that Government would expedite actions to make the dumpsite more functional.

          “I’ve seen that this site is not functioning up to capacity and it’s one of the biggest we have in Ogun State. What we intend to do now is to make it more functional by creating better access roads to the dumpsite”. Oyeleye said.

          On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Kunle Osota said that once Government rolls out its house-to-house waste management programme in partnership with the private-sector, Government would scale up enforcement of zero tolerance to indiscriminate dumping of refuse at illegal dumpsites.

          Osota assured that the house-to-house waste collection programme would be affordable to residents across the State, explaining that cost would be between 500 and 1000 naira per household.
